It was love at first sight. We stopped at a dealership and test-drove the car. A few months after researching what we wanted, we returned to order our FIAT 500 Lounge. It’s been over a year now, and we are having a blast. Our family says we never stay home anymore, and it’s true. We go out as much as we can. We love when people smile and point. We just wave and smile back. We find it really exciting when you pass a fellow FIAT 500 driver and he or she gives a wave. We are super happy with our little blue FIAT 500!
Back in 1977, when I was young, single and foolish, I bought a new green FIAT X1/9 from the dealer. At the time, I was living in the Atlanta area and used to love to drive it on the winding, curvy mountain roads of North Georgia on weekends. About three and half years ago, being older, married, but still foolish, I decided I had to buy another X1/9. It was a 1979 with chalky, oxidized silver paint with black trim finish. I decided to get it painted yellow.
After I returned home with the fresh paint job, my wife immediately named the X1/9 “Old Bird.” Currently, I live in the Los Angeles area, and almost every weekend, Old Bird and I enjoy driving around the Palos Verdes Peninsula, where there are curvy roads – just what the car was designed for. Love again.
During my brief 18 years, I have been raised in a home that revolves around Italian automobiles. Both of my parents grew up in car families, and serendipitously, both grew up around numerous Italian vehicles. My mother’s and her best friend’s first cars were matching FIAT Bravas, and my grandfather has owned upward of 15 individual FIAT vehicles.
My dad also grew up around cars, and worked as a mechanic specializing in FIAT, Alfa Romeo and Lancia vehicles. Because my dad was one of few in the Portland, OR, area who could fix a FIAT vehicle, my parents met and fell in love over vehicle repair! Twenty years and four kids later, my dad anxiously awaited the return of the FIAT 500. He was first in line at the dealership and still visits so often that all of the dealers know him by name. His FIAT 500 Abarth is the best around!
