Uconnect Makes Its FIAT® Debut

on by FIAT USA

In March 1876, Alexander Graham Bell patented what became the modern telephone, changing human communication forever.  We don’t know exactly how Bell’s first phone worked, but we do know a thing or two about Uconnect, the innovative in-vehicle communication, and entertainment system making its FIAT® debut in the 2014 500L and 500L Trekking available in summer 2013.

Uconnect allows for intuitive hands-free control of communication, entertainment and navigation tools.  A popular system for nearly a decade, the all-new 500L models will feature Uconnect 5.0. This latest version of Uconnect has been built using the past incarnations of the proven Uconnect technology drivers love.

Featuring a 5” touchscreen, Uconnect 5.0 enables hands-free calling through Bluetooth-equipped smartphones.  The system can also “read” texts received on paired phones equipped with both Bluetooth and Message Access Profile (MAP). Drivers can also reply to text messages by selecting from a list of 18 pre-defined responses – all by using voice recognition.

Uconnect 5.0 also allows for voice control of navigation, AM/FM and optional SiriusXM Radio, and can stream music wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled smartphones.  Other audio devices can connect to the system through its media hub, which includes an auxiliary jack and USB port. The 500L and 500L Trekking also include an integrated CD player.

For those who like to live just a little larger, the 500L models will also offer Uconnect 6.5, featuring a 6.5” touchscreen display and all of the communication and entertainment features of Uconnect 5.0.  In addition, Uconnect 6.5 provides dealer-activated navigation with over 6-million Points of Interests (POI’s), and a media hub with SD card reader.

Both Uconnect 5.0 and 6.5 are available with an optional Parkview rear backup camera and the optional Beats Audio System for studio-quality sound – just the way the artist intended.

Both the 500L and 500L Trekking featuring Uconnect 5.0 and 6.5 arrive in FIAT studios in mid-2013.

Have you used Uconnect in a vehicle before?  If you already know and love the system, share your story in the comments.

OK, this is about 1/4 of the way there. It’s just a radio with GPS & phone integration.

    1. Skip the dealer-activated navigation, just use Google maps.

    2. Needs to receive & audibly read email.
    2. Add vehicle controls to the touchscreen, i.e. Heat/AC, heated seats, mirror adjustment, windows, locks, etc. This can be a touchscreen with pages accessed from home screen App buttons and one home button. Just like a smartphone or tablet that we are familiar with already.
    3. Provide moblie interface from smartphone for Remote Door Lock & Unlock, Remote Climate Control, turn on Heated Seats, Locate Vehicle, etc. similar to My BMW Remote & BMW ConnectedDrive.

These features should be simple and cost effective. It’s all readily available technology, addressable digital interface for controlled devices, software programming & Apps. Less wiring & connections than manual controls. Less than this is not enough, and will probably become obsolete in a few years anyway.

How can you honor Alexander Graham Bell when all good Italians know the telephone was invented by Antonio Meucci. Look it up!

So, seriously, when will UConnect be available in the 500, 500c, and Abarth? I can do without a navigation system, as a smartphone can do that job much better, but streaming bluetooth audio is standard on SO many vehicles right now that to not even have it as an option on models as new as the American Fiat lineup seems very shortsighted and poorly designed.

It would help if you’d all read the info on this system from driveuconect.com.

They say this will control various other functions such as the HVAC depending upon vehicle, and system employed, such as the Uconnect 8.5. In the Fiat 500L, I doubt it’ll do that as the base 5″ system doesn’t have sat-nav, but goes get park sense. The 6.5 will get both the sat-nav, and the park sense, and both will play CD’s and stream Bluetooth audio. Also, the 6.5 gets the Beats setup for its premium audio, for what it’s worth.
