We spent a lot of time in the FIAT® 500L with Josh Johnson (aka #jj) and his editors Kevin Kuster, Emily Gomez and Michael Petruzzi during the FIAT USA Open Road Challenge. With 150,000,000 users, Instagram is the most popular dedicated photo-sharing platform, and as the creators and facilitators of the largest photography community on Instagram, the #jj leaders know a thing or two about achieving “instasuccess.” We made the most of our time with the #jj team during the trip and asked them their five tips to creating eye-catching Instagram content. Simplify - Clearly and concisely convey your message through simple images with 1–2 points of interest, and don’t overcomplicate your photos with distracting colors and busy backgrounds.

Take control of exposure – When you point your smartphone at something to take a photo, it may focus on the wrong thing, or make a subject against a light background too dark. All you need to do is tap the subject on your screen to set exposure to ensure that your main subject is in focus and properly lit. Make it interesting – Experiment with different angles and lighting to make your photos more interesting.

Experiment with new apps and filters – Smartphone apps serve as editing tools that allow you to make simple adjustments to your photos like fine-tuning saturation and contrast, and cropping, and you can also add a variety of dramatic filters – but don’t overdo it.

Engage and encourage – Participate in forums and connect with other users by liking and commenting on their photos. The more active you are on Instagram, the more exposure you receive and the more likely you are to gain new followers. These simple tips are well within reach of even novice photographers, yet can lead to much more interesting images in your Instagram feed no matter how much experience you have.
