Always ready for the spotlight, the FIAT 500 Abarth was treated like a VIP during the ninth annual ESPN the Magazine Pre-Draft Event (the FIAT enthusiasts it brought with it were also given star status). This annual event was held at the Waterfront in New YORK City’s Chelsea district on April 25. The Abarth rubbed elbows (and fenders) with top draft picks as well as some of the biggest names in professional football.
We held a draft of our own to put together our VIP team to join the Abarth as it made its presence known at the hottest event of draft week. March 28 through March 30, we challenged followers of @fiatusa on Twitter to put their football knowledge to the test. Each day, we posed trivia questions to our followers and selected a lucky few from those who answered using the hashtag #AbarthVIP. There were no signing bonuses, but our winners did walk away with two tickets to the event, round-trip airfare for two toNew York, accommodations, and prize packs from ESPN and FIAT. Not too shabby, right?
Receiving the full VIP treatment, winners were chauffeured to the event by limousine, walked the red carpet, and hobnobbed with ESPN personality Marcellus Wiley in the ESPN People’s Draft Social Studio.
The Abarth was not only seen at the Pre-Draft Event, it could also be found in the pages of the Draft Preview issue of ESPN the Magazine. As you would expect with this vehicle, this four-page ad was not what it first appeared to be.
When the free Aurasma app was held over the ad, which doubled as a fold-out poster, the scene sprung to life and allowed readers to interact with the ad through their mobile phone. Fans of FIAT were happy to see the appearance of Catrinel Menghia in full referee gear (complete with high-heeled football cleats).
